Monday

Our route was Worthing to Victoria
Underground to Liverpool Street
MC nearly got on the underground going in the opposite direction to what was wanted.
Liverpool Street to Ipswich
Ipswich to Woodbridge then to Norwich via Lowestoft
For the first time members of Trash split into 4 groups for getting to Liverpool Street on the first day.
This turned out not to be a problem except RR on the train from Pulborough got diverted to London
Bridge instead of Victoria.

No problem getting to Ipswich to change trains for the coastal route to Norwich via Lowestoft. We
did cause a stir at Ipswich ticket office when eight of us wanted a three in eight days Rover ticket. A
few went to find Portman Road football ground.

We got off at Woodbridge for lunch. While some ate CE went in search of the infamous windmill
museum. Having walked a considerable distance then to find it closed. Others set off to see it later
but gave up having just seen Woodbridge centre to make sure they caught the next train onwards!!

Having got the Lowestoft train on time the connection for Norwich was waiting for us. Once at
Norwich it was a 20minute walk to the hotel which was not as flat as we thought.

The Indian restaurant picked out for the evening meal turned out to be vegetarian so six of the
group went to the nearby Thai restaurant.

Tuesday

Norwich to Great Yarmouth and back, then to Ely and back.

Tuesday saw us travel to Great Yarmouth on a grey day with on/off light rain. A walk to the pier and
back was depressing with closed buildings and little going on. How do the shops survive out of
season?

Once back at Norwich we then caught the train to Ely. By this time the sun was out and the
group split on the way to the cathedral which some visited the interior. There were a number of
murals on display and students from the nearby American air bases were practicing for their
graduation awards that evening. Girls well dressed boys a bit rough and ready.

Back to Norwich
with split meals those that missed the Indian found another while the Thai was used by DW & ER.

Wednesday

Wednesday saw us visit Bressingham. But just before the train left a small dog making a lot of noise
was seen dashing up and down the corridor before rushing out through an open door. It was shortly
followed by its owners. Next thing it somehow got onto the track under the train parked in the next
platform and was eventually rescued by station staff on their knees reaching down for it.
Fortunately once back, the owners now were carrying the dog onto the train, so we still left on time!

There was plenty to see at Bressingham, stationary locos and memorabilia while everyone took
several trips on the operating narrow gauge railways. Probably the highlight of the day was seven
SOGS riding on the bobbing horse Carousel roundabout with it recorded for posterity.

That evening we all attended an Italian restaurant which had good service in addition to good food.

Thursday

Norwich to Peterborough via Ely then Peterborough to Lincoln via Newark.

Thursday we travelled to Lincoln via Ely with a change of trains at Peterborough. Peterborough to
Lincoln via Newark was a new route for the group. Our first serious rain appeared on arrival but it
didn’t last. This allowed time to look around at places not previously visited.

That evening we went
to a Spanish Tapas which was a very good standard.

Friday

Lincoln to Newark Castle then Newark to Kings Cross then Worthing/Brighton.

Friday saw the group split in going to Newark for the train home to London. MG & ER visited the
remains of the castle and then went to the nearby lock. Apparently there are at least six on the river
Trent. The lock keeper told us a lot of information about his work. He pointed us to the largest
inland dry dock and a 17 th century bridge just a short distance away.

On the way to the station we
briefly visited the museum for the National Civil War Centre within the town theatre complex.

We reassembled at Newark station for the train to London which arrived on time and we all got back
home early evening via different routes.
